Document Summary

How is it that the face acts as a social signaling system that influences our perceptions and reactions (cid:498)the face is not an empty canvas(cid:499) Psychologists often are very excited by the prospect of studying how different factors, either directly or indirectly, influence experience. Introduce a complex experimental design that is ideally suited to disentangle both direct and interactive influences on measured responses. This is used when a researcher seeks to manipulate two or more independent variables at the same time. These complex experimental designs are more realistic because they allow a researcher to examine how independent variables interact with each other. They are also more efficient than an experimental analysis limited to a one- at-a-time variable manipulation. Instead of having to conduct a series of independent single-factor experiments, we can effectively combine these experiments into one. These complex experimental designs are referred to as factorial designs.
