Ethics: the application or moral principles or right and wrong to help lead one"s behaviour and decisions. Individuals usually arrive at their own conclusion of ethics. Utilitarian perspective: the greatest good for the greatest number of people. Altruistic perspective: do harm to no one and act selflessly. Egoism: whatever benefits ones self should be chosen. Ethical principles and guidelines to protect human rights in research. Do no harm -whether physical, emotional (e. g. stress), loss of privacy/confidentiality (particularly to sensitive topics such as sexual behaviour, violence and guilt) Cost-benefit analysis: maximizing benefits for the research while minimizing risks to participants. Human beings are all valuable just by being alive and so are due respect and consideration. Informed consent must be taken from all participants (autonomy: the ability to make decisions and act according to those decisions. Some people may not be able to make decisions because of the lack of capability etc. )
