Personality: as a characterisic patern of thinking, feeling, and behaving that is unique to each individual and remains relaively consistent over ime and situaions. Psychologists have long searched for a theory of personality that would describe and explain how people develop these paterns. One major challenge for the ield has been to develop measures of people"s personaliies which has resulted in two broad approaches to personality measurement: the idiographic approach and the nomotheic approach. Idiographic approach: creaing detailed descripion of a speciic person"s unique personality characterisics. So when you are " trying to igure yourself out" trying to understand why you cousin bobby is so weird or why your friend alexis keeps making such terrible relaionship choices, you are taking a idiographic approach. Nomotheic approach: examine personality in large groups of people with the aim of making generalizaions about personality structure.
