Medical model sees psychological condiions through the same lens as western medicine tends to see physical condiions as sets of symptoms, causes, and outcomes, with treatments aimed t changing physiological processes in order to alleviate symptoms. Maladapive is determined by three key criteria which include whether it causes distress to oneself or others, impairs day-to-day funcioning, or increases the risk of injury or harm to oneself or others. Diagnosic and staisical manual of mental disorders (dsm) a standardized manual to aid in the diagnosis of disorders. Mental disorder defence (insanity defence) claims that the defendant was in such an extreme, abnormal state of mind when commiing the crime that he or she could not discern that the acions were legally or morally wrong. Personality disorders paricularly unusual paterns of behaviour (relaive to one"s cultural context) that are maladapive, distressing to oneself or others, and resistant to change.
