Document Summary
Motivation concerns the physiological and psychological process underlying the initiation of behaviours that direct organisms toward specific goals. Motivation contributes to homeostasis- the body"s physiological processes that allow it to maintain consistent internal states in response to the outer environment. Allostasis- motivation is not only influenced by current needs but also by the anticipation of future needs. If glucose lvls. are low, glucostats signal the hypothalamus that energy supplies are low leading to hunger. Sugars are absorbed into the bloodstream and body when food reaches stomach and intestines: insulin hormone secreted by the pancreas helps cells store glucose for future use. As insulin lvls rise when food is consumed, hunger and glucose decreases which later leads to hunger again. When fat receptors of the tongue are stimulated, the cingulate cortex (involved in emotional processing) is activated; the orbitofrontal cortex is involved in linking food taste and texture w/ reward.
