Document Summary
Approximately 10% of population seek treatment for mental health issues. There is no objectively, easily definable line between mentally healthy and mentally ill, and this ambiguity makes it unclear exactly when it is desirable for people to seek treatment. Also people do not want others to see them negatively, or they are skeptical with psychological professionals. One in every two canadians admits they would not likely socialize with a friend with serious mental illness and one in four they are afraid to be around people with serious illness. Barriers to psychological treatment include stigmas about mental illness, gender roles (males need to be seen as strong and independent), expense, and availability, involuntary treatment. Clinical psychologists have received ph. d. level of training, and are able to formally diagnose and treat mental health issues ranging from every day and mild to chronic and severe.
