Developmental psychology is the study of human physical, cognitive, social, and behavioural characteristics across the lifespan. Cross-sectional design is used to measure and compare samples of people at different ages at a give(n point in time (e. g. groups of 1,5,10, and 20 year olds) Longitudinal design follows development of same set of individuals through time ( a group of infants studied periodically over the course of 20 years) Zygote to infants zygote initial cell formed when the nuclei of egg and sperm fuse. Germinal stage (0 to 2 weeks): is the first phase of prenatal development. The zygote begins to divide and travels down fallopian tubes and it is implanted into uterus. The blastocyst (ball of cells) where the inner group of cells develop into the fetus and outer group of cells forms the placenta which will pass oxygen and nutrients to, and expel waste from the fetus.
