Document Summary

A little story: defining and classifying disorders (15. 1) In the past, to deal with people that seemed abnormal they would try to drive the demon out of the person"s body or would simply execute them (ie. witch-hunts). The goal of them were to help the people become cured specifically they wanted to cure their bodily afflictions that gave rise to their symptoms. Their methods were not very helpful they would, sometimes, drain up to 40% of the patient"s blood! They hoped to shock the person out of the diseased state. Phillipe pinel and dorothea dix led the change in treating mental illnesses they advocacy for the mentally ill led to moral treatment in which patients were treated with kindness and decency. Medical model: sees psychological conditions through the same lens as western medicine tends to see physical conditions as a set of symptoms, causes, and outcomes, with treatments aimed at changing physiological processes in order to alleviate symptoms.
