Document Summary
Consciousness: person"s subjective awareness, including thoughts, perceptions, experiences of the world, and self-awareness. Infradian rhythm: any rhythm that occurs over a period of time longer than a day (ex: menstrual cycle) Circannual rhythm: yearly cycle (ex: bears hibernating for months in the winter) Ultradian rhythms: biological rhythms occurring more than once a month (ex: heart rate, urination, some hormonal activity, etc) Circadian rhythms: internally driven daily cycles of approximately 24 hours affecting our physiological and behavioural processes (ex: specific times we may feel tired/awake/hungry, etc) Regulated by daylight interacting with nervous & endocrine system. Wake-sleep cycle is controlled by this interaction: Suprachiasmatic nucleus (scn): information of light from the eyes (in hypothalamus) receiving. Scn communicates signals about light levels in pineal gland, releasing melatonin. Information about melatonin levels feeds back to hypothalamus. Entrainment: biological rhythms become synchronized to external cues (ex: light, temperature, clock, etc)
