Belongingness and love needs: hierarchy of needs. Why one need at a time? (simultaneous needs) Biased towards western culture: eastern focus: collectivism. Human motivation extends to more than survival: belonging is a need, not a want. Need to belong (affiliation motivation): motivation to maintain relationships that involve pleasant feelings (ex: warmth, affection, appreciation, mutual concern for other"s well-being) Permeant relationships give happier and better life satisfaction (quality over quantity) Passionate love: associated with physical and emotional longing for the other person ( honeymoon phase) Compassionate love: related to tenderness, and affection we feel when our lives are intertwined with another person (commitment) Love is a reward state similar to other motivation: love & commitment. Brain activity for break-ups are similar to a drug craving, but decreases over time. Achievement motivation: achievement motivation: drive to perform at high levels and to accomplish significant goals. Approach goal: enjoyable and pleasant incentive that a person is drawn toward (ex: praise, reward, satisfaction)
