Document Summary

Motivation-concerns the physiological and psychological processes underlying the initiation of behaviours that direct organisms toward specific goals. Drive-a biological trigger that tells us that we may be deprived of something and causes us to seek out what is needed, such as food/water. Homeostasis-the body"s physiological processes that allow it to maintain consistent internal states in response to the outer environment. Allostasis-motivation not only influenced by current needs but also by the anticipation of future needs. The motivation that reduces a drive or in response to an incentive can lead to the same behaviour. Experiment on rats showed: lateral hypothalamus cause rats to begin to eat (on switch), ventromedial, paraventricular regions of hypothalamus causes rats to stop eating (off switch, if damaged=obesity) Hypothalamus detects changes in level of glucose-sugar that serves as a primary energy source for the brain and the rest of the body.
