Concept of a chair can be divided into smaller more precise labels such as arm chair. Categories: refer to these clusters of interrelated concepts: lump together under single label furniture. Graded membership: the observation that some concepts appear to make better category members then others. Prototypes: are mental representations of an average category member: allow for classification by resemblance. Main advantage helps explain why some category members make better examples than others. Semantic network: an interconnected set of nodes (or concepts) and the links that join them to form a category. Links connect them together to represent the structure of a category as well as the relationship among different categories. Hierarchy: consists of a structure moving from general to very specific: helps us understand how categories work in daily thought and language by identifying basic level category.
