The elected representatives of the canadian people meet in open, verbal combat in question. Period in the house of commons about 135 days/year. Members on the opposition side attack the p. m. and other ministers for acts of omission and commission while the government responds with laudatory statements and statistics on its own performance. Politicians" reputations are often made and broken during these exchanges and other debates. The house of commons is the central link between the public and government in canadian democracy (as the hoc members are publicly voted in) The senate is deemed a much more peaceful place. Viewed by canadians as a group of unelected, elderly party hacks who collect generous remuneration for doing little work . Every 4 or 5 years (or more with minority governments), voters in each local constituency elect their representative to the house of commons.
