NROB60H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Neuron, Brainstem, David Ferrier
Document Summary
Week 1 introduction, neuroscience: past, present and future. Neuroscience takes an interdisciplinary approach, a combination of traditional approaches to yield new synthesis. Evidence suggested that our prehistoric ancestors appreciated that the brain was vital to life. Archaeological record of hominid skulls show cranial damage likely caused by other hominids, which shows that they knew it was important some how. But there is evidence that not everyone thought that the brain was important. In egypt, after death, they preserved many organs but the brain was not one of them: views of the brain in ancient greece. Correlation between structure and function differences in appearance predict differences in function i. e. your hands look different from your feet because they do different things! So what about the structure of the head: it is specialized for sensing the environment with the eys and ears, nose, and tongue! Hippocrates: suggested that the brain is the organ of sensation and the seat of intelligence.
