Chapter 7: the structure of the nervous system. Anterior/ rostral pointing towards a rat"s nose. Posterior/ caudal pointing towards the rat"s tail. Bilateral symmetry the left side of the brain and spinal cord is the mirror image of the left side. Midline invisible line running down the middle of the nervous system. Medial structures closer to the midline. Lateral structures farther away from the midline. Ipsilatreal 2 structures that are on the same side: e. g. right eye and right ear. Contralateral 2 structures that are on opposite sides of the midline: e. g. right ear and left ear. Midsagittal plane the plane of the section resulting from splitting the brain into equal right and left halves. Sagittal plane sections parallel to the midsagittal plane. Horizontal plane parallel to the ground: splits the brain into dorsal and ventral. Coronal plane perpendicular to the ground and to the sagittal plane: splits brain into anterior/rostral and posterior/caudal parts.
