Document Summary

3 distinct layers of cells in embryo: endoderm lining of internal organs, mesoderm bone and skeletal muscles, ectoderm nervous system and skin. Neural plate from ectoderm give rise to nervous system. Neural groove is formed (the walls are called the neural folds) Neural tube: formed from the folds and grooves moving towards each other, develops into the entire. Neural crest: tissue pinched off from neural tube which later creates all neurons with cell bodies in. Neurulation: process that neural plate becomes the neural tube. Failure to form neural tube properly is a common defect. Entire brain is made from three primary vesicles of the neural tube: proencephalon most rostral vesicle (aka forebrain, mesencephalon midbrain, rhombencephalon hindbrain. Connect to caudal neural tube to make spinal cord. Vesicles extend from forebrain: optic vesicles become optic nerves and retinas later on, telencephalic. Rest of the forebrain is the diencephalon located between the 2 vesicles.
