NROB60H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Cognitive Neuroscience, Dementia, Institutional Animal Care And Use Committee
Document Summary
Hippocrates believed that the brain was not only involved in sensation, but was also the seat of intelligence. Aristotle believed that the heart was the center of intellect: the brain was a radiator for cooling blood that was overheated by the seething heart. The cerebrum is largely concerned with sensation and perception: also a repository of memory. The cerebellum is primarily a movement control centre. White matter contains the fibres that bring information to and from the gray matter. The same general pattern of gyri and sulci/fissures enabling the parceling of the cerebrum into lobes: led to speculation that different functions might be localized to the different bumps on the brain. Bell proposed that the origin of the motor fibres is the cerebellum and the destination of the sensory fibres is the cerebrum: experimental ablation method - parts of the brain are systemically destroyed to determine their function.
