Hypothesis: a formal statement of the expected relationship between two variables. Variables: measures that can take on two or more values. Independent variable: a predictor or cause of variation in a dependent variable. Dependent variable: a variable that will vary as a result of changes in the independent variable. Example: the less fair people perceive their pay to be, the more likely they will be to resign their job. Pay fairness perceptions is the independent variable and signing is the dependent variable. Example: the introduction of a small attendance bonus will reduce absenteeism. The attendance bonus is the independent variable and absenteeism is the dependant variable. Moderating variable: a variable that affects the nature of the relationship between an independent and a dependent variable such that the relationship depends on the level of the moderating variable. A moderating variable might be pay satisfaction. Mediating variable: a variable that intervenes or explains the relationship between an independent and a dependent variable.
