Document Summary

If a particular phenomenon always changes with age, regardless of cohort or period, then it is an age effect. If the change is specific to a particular cohort but does not occur in any other group, then it is an cohort effect. Although some diseases such as cvd and cancer are the leading causes of death in late life, others like arthritis are not fatal but can adversely affect quality of life. In late life, however, the acute vs. chronic distinction can become blurred. E. g. people w/ chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are more susceptible to acute illnesses like colds, pneumonia, and other viral infections of the lungs.
