Three ways the environment can affect our health: air - breathe, water - drink, land - eat. Rachel carson certain chemicals known as organic compounds (used for pesticide and herbicides) are highly persistent in the environment: chemicals stored in animal tissues. Petrochemical industry manufactures synthetic products using raw materials (example: crude oil/petroleum and gas) Carcinogens = produced from these industries in such great amounts that their effects are felt throughout our environment. Four known health effects from smog: respiratory diseases (ex: asthma, cardiovascular diseases, allergies, neurological effects (ex: lower iq) Illness related to air pollution = cause increased medication use, increased doctor/emergency room visits, hospital admissions and premature death.
