Document Summary

Chapter 2 theorizing health: major theoretical perspectives. Theory - explanation of how things work and why things happen. Helps us make sense of our world. Answers to the how and why questions. Shows the way certain facts are connected to one another. People have opinions or theories about how and why social life is the way it is. Sociology - study of social life and human behaviour. How theories are different from everyday opinions: they attempt to explain social life by presenting a logical, detailed and coherent account derived from systematically researched evidence. A theory attempts to simplify reality and generalize its common and related features relevant to the topic at hand. There is no single sociological theory of everything. Each theory is valid for a certain range of phenomenon. New theories have to be found to replace the old one or to extend it by improving the approximation.
