Household to factory artisans into workers chapter 1 (notes) Three factors have changed self sufficient individuals into members of a booming capitalist system: the market, transportation, and manufacturing. During the late 1700"s and early 1800"s up until the eve of the civil war, most americans lived off the land or adhered to a certain lifestyle known as the household economy or household production. Household production - a productive unit that was sustained on its own labor and raw materials. A household was the unit of production with various family members, apprentices, and journeymen all coming together to produce a specialized product for immediate trade. The most common specialized product was cloth and other textiles. Farm chores and activities took up most of an individual"s time. Farm chores included, plowing the fields, gathering crops, harvesting and planting crops, maintaining farm equipment, gathering wood, caring for livestock, spinning and weaving, and smoking and salting fish and other meats.
