Resistance: theory, research, and practic san diego : elsevier science & technology books. There are many problems with prevention efforts spanning back the last three decades, such as rape myths that society believes in, and that there is a lack in research regarding programs and their contents. Earliest methods of sexual violence prevention was to teach women self-defence (4) and encourage them to avoid dangerous places when alone. These methods don"t work if a person knows the perpetrator, and most women were already using these strategies. Then, reducing victim blaming was focused on. Studies started being conducted by schools due to sexual violence on campus, and working on prevention programs. Again, situation was harder to analyze because perpetrators and victims are usually on a known basis and assault happens when intoxicated. Created programming for mixed-sex and females-only, but since research was limited and information was scarce, it wasn"t really effective.
