EESB18H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Seiche, Subduction
Document Summary
Flow straight, like a constant high tide. Moves the entire water column in the ocean as it passes. Separate smaller waves, with nothing behind it. When the wave front gets too tall it topples over. When waves and their energy from various storms combine. Movement initiated by subduction zone earthquakes with shallow hypocentres. Needs to have a magnitude of 7 or higher. Put jolts of energy into water when they explode, and collapse. Also happen when lava/other materials hit the water. Gravity pulls rock and sediment masses into and beneath the seas. Can be caused by volcanoes collapsing and earthquakes moving things. Oscillating wave that slosh back and forth in an enclosed body of water.
