Document Summary
(cid:728). (cid:729) a brief history of the study of greek myth - Study of greek mythology has been going on for almost 2500 years. First mythological handbooks were written 500 bc. Roman poets often took sources from greek sources, such as callimachus and apollonios of rhodes. Parthenios of nikaia was greek poet who even dedicated a book about mythological love stories to cornelius gallus, as parthenios anticipated that gallus would use his material. There used to be many of these mythological handbooks, but they have all since been lost. And even handbooks that have survived are seen as abridged versions of the original myth. Knowing greek myth was a sign of a prestigious education in roman culture, with myths even being taught to school children. It was this need for cultural capital that saved many details of greek myth for us to read today.
