Movement was the first self-conscious, nationwide effort to bring oder, system and pattern to the us urban growth. Historians of the city beautiful movement have split into two camps. Programmatic origins of the city beautiful movement are to be found in the landscape design, municipal improvement, and civic design movement as they had developed by the late nineteenth century. Largely-ignored developments converted landscape design from concern with large pastoral parks to comprehensive planning for an urban or metropolitan area conceived as an organics, interrelated, interdependent entity. Reasons for historiographic lacuna may be found in the overconcentration on federick law olmsted as the representative landscape designer, and second in the concern for olmsted"s elite adaptation of pastroralism to new sites. Olmsted was no different from other amercian landscape archietects.
