Animal physiology : study of animal function. Physiology is one of the key disciplines for understanding the fundamental biology of animals, human health and disease, and the health and disease (also o(cid:374)e of (cid:271)iology"s (cid:373)ost i(cid:374)tegrative disciplines. Two central questions: what is the mechanism by which a function is accomplished, and how did that mechanism come to be? (aka problems of mechanism and origin) Mechanism: refers to the components of actual, living animals and the interactions among those components that enable the animals to perform as they do. The mechanisms of modern-day animals are products of evolution, and thus the reasons for the existence of mechanisms lie in evolutionary processes. Study of evolutionary origins a central aim of modern physiology as it reveals the significance of mechanisms.
