Document Summary

Breaks down though connective tissue + plant fibres. The bulk of each tooth has mineralized matrix similar to bone. It is called dentine: it is different from bone b/c it doesn"t have living cells. Instead, cytoplasmic processes extend into the dentine from the cells in the central pulp cavity (spongy and highly vascular: it receives blood vessel and nerves from the root canal (narrow tunnel) found @ the root (base) of tooth. Dental artery, dental vein, dental nerve enter root canal though apical foramen to service pulp cavity. Root of tooth is anchored to alveolus (bony socket) Gomphosis (strong articulation) is made of collagen fibres of the periodontal ligament extending from dentine of root to alveolar bone: periodontal ligament is protected and anchored by a layer of cement/cementum. It is less resistant to erosion than dentine. Neck of tooth marks the boundary b/w the root and the crown (the visible part of the tooth)
