Document Summary
Key terms chapter 52: ecology and the distribution of life. Ecology is the scientific study of the rich and varied interactions between organisms and their environment. Behavioural interactions among individuals of the same species may give rise to elaborate social systems. Communities: systems embracing all the organisms living together in the same area. Ecosystems: systems embracing all organisms in an area plus their physical environment. Biosphere: the system that embraces all regions of the planet where organisms live. Environment: encompasses both abiotic (physical and chemical) factors, such as wind, water, light, temperature, etc. , and biotic factors (living organisms). Climate: the average of the atmospheric conditions (temperature, precipitation, etc. ) found over the long term. Weather is the short term state of climate. The differences in air temperature among different places on earth are largely determined by differences in solar energy input.
