ANTC68H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1-2: Basic Reproduction Number, Case Fatality Rate, Cestoda
Document Summary
Endemic: when infectious/non-infectious diseases are present in a population at a relatively low constant level at all times- (little changes in incidence over time) Epidemic: when infectious/non-infectious disease rate increases above the. Expected/normal levels for a short period of time in a localized area: new cases and/or incidence. Pandemic: number of diseases occurring worldwide suddenly increases. Epidemiology: study of diseases that looks at the causes, manifestations, distribution and consequences as well as the application of diseases to control public health measures. Epidemiological questions often look at risk groups or individuals at risk trying to understand the spread of diseases. In order to answer these questions, we need statistics, surveillance and case definitions. Morbidity: sickness calculated using incidence (new cases) and prevalence (present cases) in a population at a given time. Mortality: death rates, measure of case fatality rate. Non-infectious diseases: nutrition, poison, allergens, metabolic disorders, hormonal disorders, genetic disorders, psychological disorders and physical factors.
