Document Summary

The us government successfully inflicted structural violence on drug addicts through building highways in certain ways, Central goal of ethnography is to display how the worlds most powerful nation has become a pressure cooker of drug addicts through large scale power forces affecting intimate life. The druggies used gifts (like mauss indicates) to define and express friendships, organize interpersonal hierarchies, and exclude undesirable outsiders. The drug addicts were highly skilled hustlers but not necessarily immoral. Borgeouis and schonberg participated in moral economy to understand the druggies. Abuse (according to borgeouis and schoberg) sets the individual experience of intolerable levels of suffering among the socially vulnerable in the context of structural forces and embodied manifestation of distress. Symbolic violence links immediate practices and feelings to social domination. Refers specifically to the mechanisms that lead those who are subordinated to. Misrecognize the inequeality at the natural order of things and to blame themselves for their location in their society"s hierarchy.
