For mead, the program was as important for our time as were the invention of drama and the novel for earlier generations: a new way to help people understand themselves. Noting the reasons for domestic stife, the choices characters made, and the impact those choices had on family members. Study of kinship, including family composition, descent and marriage, has long been central to sociocultural and anthropology. Franklin and mckinnon argue that the study of kinship is itself symbolic of the anthropological tradition. When we study kinship, we are interested in who is considered a relative and who is not and in the ways people make particular relationships meaningful.
