First evidence of hominids was in 1925 by raymond dart. > the taung child was an intermediate btw apes & hominids. > australopithecus africanus (southern ape of africa) had 2 distinctions. > the canine teeth were no bigger than a human"s child. > the position of the foramen magnum was well underneath the skull rather than toward the back as in apes; indication of bipedalism. > foramen magnum, the hole in the skull"s base through which the spinal cord emerges & around the outside of which the top vertebra articulates. Their faces are less prognathous & they lack a sagittal crest w/ smaller canine & a more rounded tooth row w/ no gap.
