Generally, canadian universities have been portrayed as friendly and accepting, however there have been discriminatory occurrences here as well. At the university of toronto, a professor resigned a fellowship from massey college (a graduate students" college af liated with uoft), after he made a racially discriminatory statement. The professor has resigned, the college suspended the use of the term master, and the college has promised to participate in anti-racism training. In the past, another university of toronto professor had refused to address students with their preferred gender-neutral pronouns. At queen"s university, some students held a racist costume party. The student union at ryerson university considered changing the name of the school to re ect upon its role in the residential school system. The author is of sri lanken descent and was the president of an academic student union at the university of toronto.
