Document Summary
Chapter 4: effects of economic changes & inequalities on families. Not only are the rich getting richer, but the middle class is losing ground. Rise of feminine employment & the dual-income family. Since 1980, women"s participation in the formal labour force has substantially increased across the world. Mothers" labour participation has increased at each child age level. This has given rise to an increase in two-income families. Currently, without the earning of the second worker, the number of families living in poverty would double. in two-parent families, mothers" wages have become increasingly important and now account for 41 percent of total family earnings. Wage gap between male and female workers has narrowed, women who are employed full-time still earn 72 percent of what men earn. The reasons are manifold but can be subsumed under the rubric of gender inequality in a masculine social order. Labour by women and feminine employment activities continue to be devalued.
