White-collar crime has been around for a long time, even in fourth century bc. Aristotle wrote about embezzlement, athenian constitution made theft of public money by government officers a crime, and even the bible wrote about condemning exploitative business activities as harmful to the common good. Edward alsworth ross railing against criminaloids being powerful business owners and executives who exploit people and manipulate the marketplace out of an uninhibited desire to maximize their profits while pretending to be respectable. Edwin h. sutherland coined the term white-collar crime and defines it as a crime committed by a person of respectability and high social status in the course of his occupation. White-collar is used to refer principally to business managers and executives and do not include crimes of upper class like murder, adultery, intoxication since these are not customarily a part of their occupational procedures.
