Compared children who were being raised in an orphanage to those being raised in a nursing home attached to women"s prison. Mothers cared for babies in nursing home but nurses took care of babies in orphanage. 9-12: orphans more susceptible to infections (higher death rate) 2-3: nursing home children were walking and talking. Suspected orphans would have impaired sexual life when they reached maturity. Self: set of ideas and attitudes abut who one is as an independent being. Having a baby (same baby throughout the experiment) One phase: baby dressed in blue (colour signals gender) Signals sent out to the adults change, not the baby.
