PSY345H5 Chapter Notes - Chapter 13: Tunnel Vision, Zoom Lens, Cortical Visual Impairment
Document Summary
Audition- the act or sense of hearing. The auditory process involves the transmission of sound through the vibration of an object to a receiver. To become sounds, a vibration can also be carried by metal, water and other substances. The ear is the mechanism through which sound is collected, processed and transmitted to an area in the brain that decodes the sensations into meaningful language. Deafness- people who can only hear at 90 db or greater, they use vision as their primary input and cannot understand speech. Hard of hearing (partial hearing): a sense of hearing that is deficient but somewhat functional. The two primary types of hearing loss are the peripheral problems and the central auditory problems. Not always accurate so it should be done with caution. Sensorineural is more severe than conductive and is permanent. Intelligence: the distribution of iq scores for these individuals is similar to that of hearing children.
