Stages of memory: they rest on memory, perception/attention encoding short term memory long term memory retrieval stage. Our memory can change each time we retrieve the event, some parts of event may be embellished or guessed at because we cannot remember all the details. Eyewitness memory retrieval can be partitioned into: recall memory: reporting details of a previously witnessed event or, recognition memory: determining whether a previously seen item or person is the same as what is currently being viewed. We can study eyewitness testimony through lab simulations: unknowing participant views critical event and is unaware that they will be questioned about the event until after. Witness protection program: administered by rcmp, protects those who provide police with info for investigation and prosecution; provide short term protection and permanent relocation (identity change) Independent variables: can be manipulated/controlled by experimenter: estimator variables: present at the time of the crime and that cannot be changed.
