Some young people with mood disorders may not report feeling sad at all, but they will express it in their irritable moods (touchiness and anger outbursts) Depression symptoms in children may present as general lack of exuberance, bounce and enthusiasm. They may display excessive clinging and whiny behavior around their mothers and they are irritable for no apparent reason. In school age children, it can present as weight-loss, headaches and sleep disturbances. The common characteristic of all depressive disorders is the presence of sad, empty, irritable mood along with somatic and cognitive symptoms that interfere with individual functioning. Cannot be diagnosed in the presence of a manic episode, physiological effects of a substance, or depression that is part of normal bereavement. Must cause significant distress and impairment in functioning. Age of onset is between 15 and 19 years but studies have shown that it can be seen earlier at 13 and 15.
