Document Summary
Fundamental assumption about interpersonal attraction: we are attracted to people whose presence is rewarding to us. Two types of rewards influence attraction: direct rewards: The more direct rewards that people provide, the more attractive they are to us. Refers to pleasures that we are not aware of and are associated with someone else: anything about new acquaintances that resembles us makes them more likeable. People are likely to fall in love with someone whose name resembles their own name. Factors affecting attractiveness: physical characteristics, personality/ preferences, proximity, reciprocal liking, culture. Interpersonal factors: attraction involves the appealing person"s characteristics, and it also involves individual needs, preferences, desires, and the situation. Relationships are more rewarding when they involve people who are near each other (both physically and psychologically close) Physical proximity to others determines whether or not we will ever meet them in the first place. There is a clear connection between physical proximity and interpersonal interactions.
