Document Summary

Criteria that researchers use to evaluate the quality of their own and eachers operational definitions- reliability and validity. Characteristics that are important in operationally defining variables. Often used to study psychological attributes ie intelligence self-esteem , extraversion , depression. Also used to measure abilities attributes and potential. Reliability consistency/stability of a measure of behaviour- eg intelligence test same results every time for same person reliable measure doesn"t fluctuate from one measurement instance to the next. 1- true score real score on variable. 2- measurement error- the degree to which a measurement deviates from true score value. Reliable measure contains little measurement error identical /near identical score. Test with the least variability is the most reliable it contains less measurement error. If measurement is reliable single administration of measure should closely reflect persons true score. Need to replicate results important in replication. Reliability can be increased by making multiple observations of the same variable.
