Inds w/ very diff fam and personal history, varying response to treatment and prognosis, and ability to live independently are given the same diagnosis. Men usually display symps earlier and more severely than women. Once diagnosed, inds are less likely to complete their educ or maintain a job and more likely to dvp additional psychiatric probs, including depression and drug use. Approx 1 in 7 pts experience recovery. Prodromal oddness and onset of subtle neg symps (~late teens) Active phase w/ destructive pos symps, treatment and relapse (~21-40y/o) Two main symp clusters: positive symps: exaggerated, distorted adaptations of normal behaviour. Include more obv symps of psychosis: delusions, hallucinations, thought and speech disorder, and grossly disorganized catatonic behaviour: negative symps: the absence or loss of typical behaviour and exp sparse speech/lang, social withdrawal, avolition, anhedonia, diminished attn. /concentration. Delusions implausible beliefs that persist despite contradictory evidence.
