Internal tension that forces you to engage in an activity. Ex: feeling hunger so you go eat to relieve that feeling. Ex: study hard to get good grades. Expectancy value model: if only 10% get good grades, your less likely to try, expecting to not be one of them, if everyone gets good grades, it means less if you do. Driven to do things to increase chance of procreation. Ex: males being dominant to have a better chance with females. Biological motives: hunger, thirst, sex, temperature, sleep, ect. Social motives: achievement, affiliation, autonomy, nurturance, dominance, exhibitory, order, play. Biological: originally thought stomach contractions caused hunger, hypothalamus. Arcuate nucleus (sensitive to incoming hunger and fullness signals) Neural circuits (regulate hunger: glucose and digestive regulation. Low glucose causes hunger to go up. High glucose causes hunger to go down. Fluctuations in blood glucose levels are monitored where they influence the experience of hunger.
