3 major approaches to the treatment of psychological disorders. Psychiatrists: physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorders, emphasize severe disorders (schizo, mood disorders, m. d degree, emphasize drug therapy and psychoanalysis. An insight therapy that emphasizes the recovery of unconscious conflicts, motives and defenses through techniques such as free association and transference. Freud believed neurotic problems were caused by unconscious left over from early childhood inner conflicts from battles between id, ego and superego. Free association: clients spontaneously express their thoughts and feelings exactly as they occur with little censorship. Dream analysis: therapist interprets the symbolic meaning of the clients dreams. Interpretation: refers to the therapists attempts to explain the inner significance of the clients thoughts, feelings, memories and behaviours. Resistance: largely unconscious defense manoeuvres intended to hinder the progress of therapy, do not want to face the painful conflicts.
