Cognition: refers to the mental processes involved in acquiring knowledge. Consists of symbols that convey meaning, plus rules for combining those symbols, that can be used to generate an infinite variety of messages. Generative: limited amount of symbols can combine in infinite ways to generate endless array of messages. Phonemes: are the smallest speech units in a language that can be distinguished perceptually. Morphemes and semantics: morphemes are the smallest units of meaning in a language. Semantics is the area of language concerned with understanding the meaning of words and word combinations. Denotation is dictionary meaning and connotation incudes emotional overtones. Syntax: is a system of rules that specify how words can be arranged into sentences. 3-month-old infants can distinguish phonemes from all worlds" languages but this skill disappears between 4-12 months. By 18 months, can say 3-50 words. Receptive vocab (understanding) is larger than their productive vocab. First words tent to be objects, and then actions.
