Sigmund freud is widely credited with launching modern psychotherapy. Psychoanalysis spawned many offspring as freud"s followers developed their own systems of treatment. Almost half of the people who use mental health services in a given year do not have a specific disorder. Unfortunately, it appears that many people who need therapy don"t receive it. Psychotherapy refers to professional treatment by someone with special training. Psychology and psychiatry are the principle professions involved in the provision of psychotherapy. Two types of psychologists ay provide therapy: clinical psychologists and counselling psychologists.
