Chapter 12: personality: theory, research, and assessment: psychologists are so interested in personality because it is used as a way of predicting what someone will do to predict their behaviour. Factor analysis is used to identify the hidden factor: the five factor model of personality traits (mccrae and costa, extraversion people who score high are characterized as outgoing, sociable, upbeat, friendly, assertive and gregarious. Positive emotionality: neuroticism people tend to be highly anxious, hostile, self conscious, insecure and vulnerable. This is related to mental disorders: openness to experience associated with curiosity, flexibility, vivid fantasy, imaginativeness, artistic sensitivity, and unconventional attitudes. Fostering liberalism, less prejudice against minorities than others: agreeableness tend to be sympathetic trusting, cooperative, modest, and straightforward. People who score the opposite are suspicious, antagonistic, and aggressive: conscientiousness tend to be diligent, disciplined, well organized, punctual, and dependable. Higher grades in high school and university are associated with higher conscientious students work harder.
