Document Summary
Neurons: individual cells that receive, integrate ad transmit information. They"re the basic links that permit communication within the nervous system and mostly communicate with other neurons, and sometimes receives messages from sensory organs or carry messages from the nervous system to the muscles that move the body. Soma (cell body): contains the nucleus and cell machinery. Dendrites: branches that are specialized to receive info that flows into the cell body. Axon: long thin fiber that transmits signals away from soma to other neurons/muscle glands. Axon is covered with myelin sheath which helps conduct the signals faster. Terminal buttons: at the end of the axon, secretes chemicals called neurotransmitters. Synapse: junction where info is transmitted from one neuron to the other. Glia: cells that provide support for the neurons: Orchestrates development of nervous system in embryos. They can also send/receive chemical signals and may play an important role in memory formation.
