Document Summary

Chapter 2: phonetics - the sounds of language. The branch of linguistics known for its inventory and structure of the sounds of speech is called phonetics. Human languages display a variety of sounds, called phones or speech sounds. A variety and range of sounds is found in human language; 600 consonants and 200 vowels. The ipa (international phonetic alphabet) had been evolving since 1888. The ipa represents speech in the form of segments - individual phones like [p], [s] or [m] Segments are produced by coordinating a number of individual articulatory gestures including jaw movement, lip shape and tongue placement. Many of these individual activities are represented as smaller subunits called features. Features reflect individual aspects of articulatory control as well as certain acoustic effects produced by articulation. Segment can be defined as an individual speech sound (phone) Sound is produced when air is set in motion.
